Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, and together with Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival forms one of the three major Chinese holidays. Since the summer is a time when diseases most easily spread, Dragon Boat Festival began as an occasion for driving off evil spirits and pestilence and for finding peace in one's life. The festival was later enriched by the legend of the patriot Chu Yuan.

Dragon Boat Festival is highlighted by the dragon boat races, in which competing teams drive their boats forward rowing to the rhythm of pounding drums. This lively and colorful tradition has continued unbroken for centuries to the present day.

The festival's significance as a time for warding off evil and disease is symbolized by a number of customary practices such as hanging calamus and moxa on the front door, and pasting up pictures of Chung Kuei (a nemesis of evil spirits). Adults drink hsiung huang wine and children are given fragrant sachets, both of which are said to possess qualities for preventing evil and bringing peace. Another custom practiced in Taiwan is "fetching noon water," in which people draw well water on the afternoon of the festival in the belief that it will cure illness. And if you can successfully stand an egg on its end exactly at 12:00 noon, then the coming year will be a lucky one.

The most popular dish during Dragon Boat Festival is tzung tzu, originally eaten in memory of the patriot Chu Yuan, but gradually evolving into a snack eaten during normal occasions as well.

Of all the major holidays celebrated in China, Dragon Boat Festival has the longest history. Occurring at the beginning of summer when insects thrive, the festival was distinguished from other occasions in earlier days as a time for reminding family members to take care of their health. The Chinese continue to heed this wisdom, however, by replacing the traditional customs of hanging calamus and moxa, drinking hsiung huang wine, and giving sachets, with more advanced methods for protecting one's health.

Chinese New Year Crafts

With the festival just a few days away, a lot of kids may be all ready to display their artistic skill by crafting out beautiful decorative items for decor to give that New Year feel. The different innovative crafts can add a lot of fun element to this whole festivity with brains pouring out creative ideas all for the sake of entertainment.

I came across a few interesting craft ideas which is simple and yet would give a boost to the creative you. See what you can try out this New Year -

1) Chinese New Year Dragon:

What You Need -

Paper egg carton
Scissors
Hole punch
Yellow craft paint
Black craft paint
Paint brush
Paint with daubers (or BINGO marking paints); or craft paint and paint brushes
7mm Wiggle eyes
1/4" White pom-pom balls
Red felt scrap
Tacky glue
2 Jingle bells (1/2")
Ribbon (we used 1/4" wide)

How To Make It -

Cut the cups apart on the egg carton. Even out the edges so the cup will sit evenly upside down on the table.
Paint the inside of one cup black for the inside of the mouth. Paint the outside yellow.
Using as few or as many cups as you wish, paint the outside of the cups yellow. Let dry.
Using the daubers, let the children paint different color dots on the yellow cups. Let dry.
Hole punch 2 holes in each cup directly across from each other.
Lace the ribbon through the holes to tie the dragon together.
Tie a jingle bell on each end of the ribbon.
Glue the head on the dragon. Note: You may need to "prop" the head up while it dries.
Cut a red tongue out of felt and glue inside of mouth.
Glue 2 pom-poms on top of the head and then glue 2 wiggle eyes attaching them to the pom-poms. (see photo) Let dry.
If you like, you can add a "leash" through the hole of the dragon to walk it around.

2) Paper Lanterns:

What You Need -

Construction paper
Scissors
Tape
Stapler
Ruler
Pencil
Glue, glitter, sequins, if desired to decorate your lantern

How To Make It -

Use your ruler to measure and cut 1" off the short end of your paper. Set aside to use as the handle.
Fold your paper in half lengthwise.
Draw a line 1" from the end of the long edge of the paper opposite the folded edge. This will be the line where you stop cutting.
Measure and mark lines 1" apart starting at the folded edge and moving towards the "stop cutting" line. (see photo)
Cut on the marked lines up to the "stop cutting" line.
Unfold the paper.
Re-crease the paper in the opposite direction. This will hide any pencil marks.
Match the long edges together on the lantern and use tape to hold it in place.
Staple the handle to the top of the lantern. (see photo)
Make as many lanterns as you wish and display them around your home.
If you wish, add glue, glitter, sequins or other things to decorate your lanterns.

The celebration of the Chinese New Year is a common platform shared by the Chinese community to resuscitate their rich cultural heritage brought from their homeland. Chinese New Year celebration in San Francisco originated in 1860’s with the phenomenal Gold Rush and is acclaimed as the largest event in North America as well as in Northern California. Chinatown located in San Francisco is a hot destination during the time of the Chinese New Year.

Celebrations in Chinatown to a large extent is influenced not only by the customs imported from China, but over the years has also adapted itself to the variegated cultures of the United States. This once a year festivity has many attractions like Chinese New Year Flower Fair, Chinatown Community Street Fair, the Chinese Carnival, Miss Chinatown USA beauty contest and above all the Chinese Parade, a blend of American marching parades and traditional Lantern festival of China. The Golden Dragon (Glum Lung) which is 201 feet long always features at the end of the parade as a sign of the grand finale accompanied by 600,000 loud, crackling firecrackers.

Throughout the two day fair, traditional Chinese dance and musical extravaganza along with an array of entertainment from other Asian cultures are performed, setting the main stage on fire. The “Chinatown Community Street Fair” takes place over the weekend of the Chinese New Year Parade and cultural arts such as lantern, calligraphy, kite making, fine arts demonstration, folk dance and puppet shows are at display.

This little town hailed by the name of Chinatown thus exuberates the joy brought forth by the Chinese New Year and transforms this foreign land into a haven for the Chinese community.

Chinese New Year : Festival Of Lanterns

On the day of the festival, various colorful and ornamental paper lanterns announce the arrival of yet another eventful year. Festival of Lanterns is more popularly known as the Shan Yuan Festival or as Little New Year. There are many interesting legends associated with the evolution of Lantern Festival in China. The Festival of Lanterns dates back to 200 years to the worship of Taiyi deity, the God of heaven during the reign of the Han Dynasty. They all believed that the God of heaven controlled the destiny of human life and had sixteen dragons at His beck and call to inflict all kinds of calamity on the human race. The emperor was thus obliged to keep Taiyi in good humor so as to be blessed with His graciousness. But it was not until 104BC that Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty drew attention to this event which would last all night long. While, another story relates how Buddha’s influence became the source of the Lantern Festival.

The fine-cutting of the paper into different shapes of butterflies, dragons, birds and animals of various kinds display the artistry involved in making these lanterns. The Lantern Festival is not just a means of entertainment but also a rich storehouse of ancient wisdom with historical themes and intriguing riddles. Off-late in a few cities in North China, lanterns are also carved out of blocks of ice. Of the many Lantern Festivals, the largest and the most famous is ‘The Taipei Lantern Festival' held annually at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Plaza. Chengdu in Southwest China's Sichuan Province also holds an annual lantern fair in the Cultural Park each year. Amongst the many that is sported, the Dragon-Pole, a lantern in the shape of a golden dragon, spiraling up a 27 meter high pole, spewing fireworks from its mouth, is a crowd-puller. Amongst all the activities, Dragon Dance is considered to be the highlight of the Lantern Festival.

Thus the traditional Festival of Lanterns held on the fifteenth day of the first month of the Chinese calendar provides a shimmering end to 15 days of ceaseless revelry.

On the occasion of the New Year, every Chinese family indulge head-on into a thorough cleaning of their house with the intention of sweeping away all ill-fortune. They also give their home-sweet-home a total face-lift with a fresh coat of paint, which is usually red. Doors and windows are decorated with spring couplets, red paper hangings and colorful paintings. Traditionally, the Chinese New Year is a time when the Chinese engage in a shopping frenzy—buying gifts, cards, clothes and decorations for the auspicious day. The Chinese New Year is also a time for family reunions all over. People living far from their loved ones make it a point to get together on the occasion of the New Year. So numerous Chinese pay a visit to their hometown to spend the New Year.

Chinese families usually gather on New Year’s eve to enjoy a grand supper together. This communal feast, called the ‘weilu’ signifies the family unity and is meant to honor both the young and old generations in same breath. They play cards and board games, watch the New Year television programs and some even go to the flower market for a last-minute shopping. Right at midnight, grand fireworks light up the night-sky while on the morning of the New Year day, children greet their elders and get the coveted ‘red packet’ or ‘lucky money’ (money wrapped in red envelopes). The Chinese spread their celebration of New Year over a span of 15 days accompanying it with their many rituals and traditional customs. The thirteenth day of the Chinese New Year is observed with simple meals like rice congee and mustard greens (choi sum). On the fourteenth day, preparations start in full swing for the grand and glorious Lantern Festival. Finally, the prosperous Chinese New Year comes to a close on the fifteenth day with the Festival of Lanterns.

The Chinese New Year has its roots in many interesting legends. One of the most popular of these legends is the legend of Nian—a vicious and fearful beast. Nian was believed to have a huge mouth and people said that this ferocious Nian could swallow humans in just one gulp. Obviously, it was greatly dreaded and in order to keep Nian at bay, the Chinese put up red paper couplets and decorations on doors and windows at the end of each year because Nian was believed to be dead scared of the color red. Firecrackers are also burst during this time with the intention of scaring away Nian or any evil whatsoever !

Thereby the Chinese start off the year with a feeling of content and renewal of having been able to keep off Nian for another year. They wish each other good luck and fortune and a prosperous “Xin Nian” or “Happy New Year”. (‘xin’ means ‘new’ and ‘nian’ meaning ‘year’).

The Chinese calendar is a yearly calendar just like the western one and its beginning is based on the cycles of the moon. Hence, the Chinese New Year can fall anywhere between late January and mid-February. In 2007, or the Chinese year 4705, the Chinese New Year is on February 18.

There are three different ways to name a Chinese Year. It is named after an animal or by its formal name using the stem-branch system and by the year that marks the beginning of the reign of Yellow King, the first king of China who was crowned as the king in 2697 B.C. For instance, 2007 is going to mark the 4705th year of the Chinese.

A complete Chinese calendar cycle is of 60 years, having five cycles of twelve years each. And each of these 12 years is named after an animal meaning these names are repeated every twelve year. The Rat marks the first year of the animal cycle while the Pig marks the last.

Many interesting and peculiar customs and traditions are an intrinsic part of celebration of the most important festival of the Chinese New Year.People are garbed in red clothes, even lanterns hung for the purpose of decoration are red in color. It is so because it is commonly believed that red symbolizes fire which according to legend can fend off bad luck. Bright red is considered to be an auspicious color and stands for happiness while gold stands for wealth. The colors black and white are avoided during this time as they represent mourning.

Every traditional Chinese home also has the custom of keeping live blooming plants to symbolize rebirth and new growth during the Chinese New Year. There is also the tradition of welcoming guests with the “Tray of Togetherness” (Cheun Hup) to wish a sweet beginning. Another significant custom associated with Chinese New Year celebration is to spend the New Year’s Eve preparing Chinese dumplings (Jiaozi) with a coin hidden inside the dumpling as it is presumed that whoever gets it will enjoy the grace of luck in the coming years. Even a traditional Buddhist vegetarian delight called “Jai” is prepared on the first day of Chinese New Year using eighteen different ingredients as the Chinese believe eighteen to be a lucky number signifying wealth and prosperity.On New Year’s Day little children are also gifted Red Lai-See Envelopes which are good luck money wrapped in little red envelopes.

Well-known for its gaiety and splendor, the Chinese New Year is, indeed, a very colorful occasion for its people and for others over the world. Kicking off on a new moon day, the Chinese New Year is a 15 day long celebration, which ends on the full moon night with the famous Festival of Lanterns. These 15 days of the celebration include prayers to ancestors, traditional meals, decorations with symbolic items (usually in red), reuniting with family, visiting friends and relatives, exchanging gifts, shopping, cleaning the house, wearing new clothes, joining in elaborate parades with masks and floats of dragon and the symbolic animal, majestic lion dances, bursting firecrackers and, of course, wishing each other a very happy ‘Xin Nian’ or a very Happy New Year !
